Membranes

Why KISO

KISO manufactures the butyl tapes and butyl-edged membranes used to join and seal membranes in construction. KISO 508 and KISO 513 combine a membrane with KISO’s own butyl, so the sealing edge and the membrane come as one product. Because KISO compounds its own butyl, tack and adhesion can be matched to the membrane and the substrate. For membrane manufacturers and distributors, KISO can produce to your specification and supply under your own brand, including packaging, printing and labels. Founded in 1971 and ISO 9001 certified, with production in Køge and customers in 20+ European countries.

Applications

Butyl strips for membrane manufacturers
Membrane manufacturers use KISO’s double-sided butyl strips to make water-, gas- and air-tight joints. KISO 354 Butyl Tape and KISO 458 Butyl Tape are self-adhesive, non-hardening butyl strips supplied in dimensions, colours and liner to your requirements. Tell us the membrane material, the substrate it will be fitted to and how the strip is applied in your production, and we will help you select the butyl.

Inner and outer sealing around windows and doors
KISO 508 Lining Barrier is a diffusion-tight LDPE membrane with butyl and/or tape, used for inner sealing when windows and doors are mounted. KISO 513 Diff-Open-PP-Butyl Tape is a diffusion-open polypropylene membrane with one or two butyl strips, used for outer sealing: it is airtight and water resistant but vapour-permeable, and accepts plaster and paint. The two are designed to be used together. For the wider building envelope, see Construction.

Sills and other membrane applications
KISO Sill Gasket is an air, moisture and vapour barrier fitted between foundation and structure. KISO’s data sheet for KISO 513 also lists air and vapour sealing in roofing and cladding systems, containers and cold stores. Application conditions vary, so we recommend testing the product for your specific use.

FAQ

What is the difference between a diffusion-tight and a diffusion-open membrane?

A diffusion-tight membrane, such as KISO 508 Lining Barrier, blocks the passage of vapour and is used for inner sealing. A diffusion-open membrane, such as KISO 513 Diff-Open-PP-Butyl, is airtight and water resistant but lets vapour pass, and is used for outer sealing. Used together they give a complete inner and outer seal.

Can KISO supply butyl strips for our own membranes?

Yes. KISO manufactures its butyl tapes in Denmark and can produce to your specification, with a choice of dimensions, colours and liner. We can supply under the KISO brand or under your own brand, including packaging, printing and labels. Send us the membrane material, the substrate, the strip dimensions and the quantity you expect, and we will assess the solution with you. We recommend testing the tape on your membrane.

Can the membrane be plastered or painted?

KISO 513 Diff-Open-PP-Butyl accepts plaster and paint. Check the data sheet of the product you are considering, as properties differ between membranes.
